Description Electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) refers to the use of computing devices to enter, modify, review, and output or communicate drug prescriptions. Electronic prescribing holds promise for reducing medication errors, improving quality, and reducing costs in health care delivery. Although some examples of electronic prescribing have existed for many years, recent advances in the use of the Internet and handheld computing are expected to speed the adoption of this technology. A nationwide e-prescription system could minimize confusion caused by hard-to-read prescriptions, preventing serious errors in doses and drug combinations, according to the eHealth Initiative. About $2 billion in savings would come from reduced hospital and doctor visits due to fewer prescribing errors, according to the Center for Information Technology Leadership. About $27 billion a year could be saved from fewer medication errors, because an electronic system would curb duplication and would also immediately inform doctors of cheaper generic alternatives. Over the last few years, e-prescribing has evolved from a fragmented niche offering to an integrated standards-based solution that can stand alone or be leveraged as part of a broader physician office solution.
