Wellinx Founder Presents on the Future of Electronic Prescribing
Tom Doerr describes potential for dramatic
improvements with more sophisticated systems.
ST. LOUIS, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Tom Doerr, M.D., co-founder and Chief
Medical Officer of Wellinx, spoke before the National Pharmaceutical Cost
Management Congress on the future of ePrescribing in New Orleans on Tuesday
October 26th. The two day conference, sponsored by the International Quality
and Productivity Center, was attended by executives from Blue Cross plans,
national health plans, major employers and the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services (CMS).
Doerr's presentation included the results of a study published in the
current issue of the Annals of Family Medicine documenting substantial savings
when physicians use the Wellinx electronic prescribing system with integrated
evidence-based decision support.
Doerr stated, "A payer with a 35% market share can save over $1,000 per
doctor per month when physicians use the Wellinx system, simultaneously
improving the quality of care. These savings can be used to finance further
adoption of health care information technology and deployment of advanced
physician-payer connectivity. Examples of advanced connectivity include
patient-specific messaging about overdue preventive care, real-time pre-
adjudication of prescriptions, reimbursement for generic samples and
automation of prior authorizations."
"Although sophisticated electronic prescribing systems have higher upfront
costs, the value they create is an order of magnitude greater than what can be
derived from simply automating the average physician's existing prescribing
process. These systems can overcome the cost and work flow barriers to
physician adoption and become a low-risk on-ramp to further computerization
and adoption of electronic health records (EHRs)."
