Emerging Health Information Technology Selected by Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center To Implement Electronic Prescription System

YONKERS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 2, 2004--Emerging Health Information Technology, a leading provider of healthcare information solutions for hospitals, integrated delivery networks and medical centers, announces that the company has been selected by Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center to implement electronic prescribing at ten of the hospital's outpatient sites. The project will help advance Bronx-Lebanon toward its goal of establishing a complete electronic health record system. The electronic prescribing solution, developed by IDX, the Vermont-based healthcare technology provider, will be hosted at Emerging Health's state-of-the-art Data Management Center in Yonkers, New York. Through Emerging Health's ability to offer a hosted platform, Bronx-Lebanon will realize the benefits of e-prescribing in less time and at a lower cost. Emerging Health will also provide infrastructure support for the application, including network management and help desk services.

"We are delighted to be working with Bronx-Lebanon in their effort to improve the quality of patient care through the use of electronic prescription management," said Jack Wolf, President and Chief Executive Officer of Emerging Health. "This system is a key factor in improving patient safety. It allows physicians to instantly retrieve a patient's medication profile, input new prescriptions and efficiently manage renewals. It is designed to eliminate illegible handwritten prescriptions and to check for drug allergies, duplicate orders, maximum dosages and medication conflicts."
According to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, more than half of the adverse medical events occurring each year in the U.S. are due to preventable medication errors. "Our implementation of this same technology at Montefiore Medical Center combined with computerized physician order entry (CPOE) reduced medication errors by 70 percent," said Wolf. At Montefiore, doctors use wireless laptops and handheld devices to access patient data, record treatment, and prescribe medication.
Emerging Health currently hosts a number of Bronx-Lebanon's information systems, including patient accounting and financial systems, patient registration, laboratory, results reporting, discharge summaries, and materials management. "Emerging Health has eliminated many of the barriers that stood between our organization and the ability to deploy technology," said Steven Anderman, Chief Information and Operating Officer for Bronx-Lebanon. "The outsourced model they've created provides us with the opportunity to leverage their technology and experience to utilize information in a way that can literally save lives."
