e-Prescribing Solution Added to Medco's Suite of Services
IRVING, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 17, 2004--Healthvision, a leading healthcare Internet company, today announced they have completed the certification protocol with Medco to connect pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) to Healthvision's e-Prescribing solution, according to Mike Lipari, senior vice president, product strategy for Healthvision.
"Medco is a leading pharmacy benefit manager and has the nation's largest mail order pharmacy operation. We are honored to have passed their rigorous certification process to permit our e-Prescribing solution to be added to their suite of services," Lipari said.
Medco has certified Healthvision's implementation of Eligibility and Formulary in the current e-Prescribing solution product release. During the certification process, Medco reviewed Healthvision's e-Prescribing functionality to ensure that the company properly collects patient eligibility data and utilizes it to generate appropriate formulary alerts when a medication is prescribed. Alerting is intended to ensure that the most cost-effective medications -- brand name or generic -- are prescribed for the patient.
Healthvision's e-Prescribing solution acts as a real-time safety net with its automated formulary verification and real-time drug interaction checking that saves time and more importantly, lessens potential danger to patients' health. The solution utilizes the RxHub data interchange to connect to pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) to check eligibility and provide real-time formulary updates. RxHub connects the industry to electronically route up-to-date patient medication history and pharmacy benefit information to physicians in their offices and at hospitals. RxHub is a nationwide information exchange connecting physicians, patients, pharmacies and pharmacy benefit managers/payers for the conveyance of critical information at every point of care.
Physicians can use Healthvision's e-Prescribing application to write electronic prescriptions on their traditional desktop PC or Pocket PC handheld device. The system automatically checks and alerts for formulary issues, drug allergies, drug interactions and more. Advanced functions allow physicians to develop a list of frequently used medications, search the pharmaceutical database, execute rapid medication renewals, provide patient handouts, and look up critical reference information while prescribing. E-prescriptions are automatically printed or relayed by fax or EDI to brick-and-mortar and mail order pharmacies, thereby reducing processing time and errors.
"With Healthvision, our physicians are able to increase the speed by which patients get their medications, improve care and increase patient satisfaction by eliminating the frustration and hassle factor traditionally involved. The Healthvision system will help our physicians provide better care to their patients," stated William Stimmler, MD, chairman of the board and family practitioner, Bright Medical Associates.
Medco is a leading pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) with the nation's largest mail order pharmacy operations. Medco assists its customers to moderate the cost and enhance the quality of prescription drug benefits provided to members nationwide.
