Wellinx Announces Presentation of New Controlled Trial Results

Wellpoint Analysis Validates Evidence-Based ePrescribing Approach

ST. LOUIS, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The results of a second controlled
study of the Wellinx electronic prescribing system were presented yesterday at
the eHealth Initiative's HIT Summit West in San Francisco. Leo Barbaro, VP of
Network Management Services for Wellpoint's Northeast Region, presented the
results of a controlled trial in which Wellpoint measured the impact of the
Wellinx ePrescribing system on generic prescribing rates as well as
prescription costs during a nine month study period.
The 26 physicians in the study group increased generic prescribing rates
3.7% relative to a control group of 86 physicians. The cost per prescription
for the study group was 10.1% lower than that of the control group.
Entitled "ePrescribing's Impact on Cost and Quality: Implications for
Pay-for-Performance Initiatives", the presentation addressed how clinical
applications with evidence-based decision support can benefit patients,
physicians, and payers alike and contribute to the success of pay-for-
performance programs.
"We are very pleased that Wellpoint was interested in measuring the impact
of our system and that these outcomes confirm those measured in earlier
controlled trials we have published," said Tom Doerr, Wellinx' Chief Medical
Officer and Co-Founder. "Wellinx is committed to building the best possible
tools for physicians to improve patient outcomes and get reimbursed for that
added value."
