Purkinje Announces Quarterly Financial Results and Publication of Additional Peer-Reviewed Results in the Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy
JMCP results show $1.07 PMPM savings and reduced utilization in 8 high-cost
drug categories, more than offsetting system costs
ST. LOUIS, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Purkinje announced record financial
results for the first quarter of 2005. During this period the company added
238 new clients with a new record of 119 medical groups added in January
alone. This marks the ninth consecutive quarter of revenue growth for the
company.
In addition, Purkinje documented continued success in helping physicians
select cost-effective medications for their patients. In its May 2005 issue,
The Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy reports a follow-up study examining the
effects of the Purkinje electronic prescribing and evidence-based decision
support system on prescription cost savings.
The original 6-month study released in October 2004 (Ann Fam Med 2:494-8
2004) showed prescription costs reduced by more than 10% among Purkinje users.
The main objective of the follow-up study was to determine if these cost
benefits were sustained during a longer, 12-month time period.
The JMCP study provides further evidence of the effectiveness of the
Purkinje e-Prescribing system on cost savings and physician prescribing
behavior. Over the 12-month study period, Purkinje users reduced new
prescription costs by $4.12 and costs for all prescriptions by $2.57 relative
to controls. Per-member per-month (PMPM) costs were reduced by $1.07, and the
utilization rate for a defined set of high-cost drugs was 17.5% lower than
that of the control group.
Both studies were conducted at Affinity Health System in Menasha, WI.
Affinity's health plan (Network Health Plan) serves 70,000 members, and 40% of
patients seen by Affinity physicians are Network Health Plan members. 200
Affinity physicians currently use the Purkinje system, resulting in dramatic
cost savings and a positive ROI for Network Health Plan.
Tom Doerr, Purkinje's Chief Medical Officer and co-founder stated,
"Purkinje is committed to building the best possible tools to help physicians
improve patient outcomes and get reimbursed for that added value. Patients,
physicians and payers all benefit from the deployment of this technology."
