RxHub Participates in Medicare Electronic Prescribing Pilots

Partnerships Demonstrating the Impact of Electronic Health Information
Exchange in Improving Quality of Care

ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- RxHub(TM) the largest nationwide
prescription information network connecting the prescribing industry for the
exchange of patient-specific prescribing information between physicians,
pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and pharmacies continues to demonstrate its
leadership position in providing value by supporting three electronic
prescribing pilot projects that received grant awards from the US Department
of Health and Human Services.
RxHub working collaboratively with grant awardees; RAND Corporation, Santa
Monica, California, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, and
Achieve Healthcare Technologies, Eden Prairie, Minnesota, will test new
standards named by the Secretary of HHS for electronic prescribing, their
interoperability with current foundation standards and provide additional
related information to help improve quality and lower cost as part of the
Medicare Modernization and Prescription Drug Improvement Act.
The new Medicare Part D program requires that an electronic prescribing
program be established that provides eligibility and benefits inquires and
responses between drug prescribers and prescription drug plans; formulary and
benefit coverage information, including information on the availability of
lower cost, therapeutically appropriate alternative drugs; secure real-time
delivery to providers and pharmacists patient-specific medication history at
the point of prescribing; and transmission of the prescription electronically
between prescribers and dispensers.
"RxHub is pleased to support President Bush's April 2004 call for
electronic health records (EHRs) within 10 years and we share the President's
mission to reduce the overall cost of health care delivery while improving
patient safety and quality of care for all Americans," said David McLean, CEO
of RxHub. "The new Medicare Prescription Drug program is one example that
demonstrates the federal government's commitment to move forward on this
promise and to support the transformation of the American health care delivery
system that will lead the world in providing the highest quality of care."
RxHub played a major role in the development of eprescribing standards
that will be tested in these pilots. RxHub at the request of the National
Committee of Vital Health Statistics and HHS, submitted its proprietary
standards for Formulary and Benefit messages and Medication History
information to NCPDP, a standards setting organization, which resulted in both
standards receiving ANSI-accreditation in late 2005.
"RxHub is thrilled at the opportunity to work with three of the winning
applications, substantiating the value of providing critical patient-specific
information to physicians at the point of decision making. Improving the
safety of health care delivery is about having the right information at the
right time," added McLean.
The outcome of these one year pilots will be an evaluation and
determination of final uniform standards for electronic data exchange as
required by the Medicare Modernization Act. Compliance to these standards
will be required in 2008.
