Henry Ford Health System and its insurance subsidiary, Health Alliance Plan, on Wednesday said they’ve filled 500,000 prescriptions electronically in the past year through their electronic prescribing program.

That program — created last year at the request of General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG — allows doctors to enter prescriptions into an online system that flags potential interactions and lower-priced generic alternatives.

In its first year, more than 80,000 prescriptions were changed or canceled because of drug-interaction alerts, and more than 50,000 were changed or canceled because of alerts that a comparable generic formula exists. Henry Ford has increased its generic use rate by 7.3 percent, which works out to a savings of about $3.1 million in pharmacy costs, according to the five-hospital system.

“In virtually every way health care quality and costs can be measured, the benefits of e-prescribing are compelling,” HAP President and CEO Francine Parker said in a statement. “E-prescribing creates a seamless electronic path from the doctor to the pharmacist to the patient. … (We’re) proud to be involved as a catalyst and pacesetter in a collaborative program that already is proving its worth to members and patients, providers and employers.”

About 300 primary-care physicians use the system in 24 Henry Ford medical centers, the health system said. All medical specialists at Henry Ford will use e-prescribing by the end of the year, the health system said.
